King of Prussia
Charitable Foundation
The King of Prussia Rotary Charitable Foundation approved the following donations. All donations were made possible by funds raised in events such as the annual golf outing, Taste of the Suburbs, plus generous contributions made by King of Prussia Rotarians.
$500 Donated to 3 Day Breast Cancer Walk
$500 was donated to the 3 Day Breast cancer Walk on behalf of Jean Bruch who is participating in the event. Participants are asked to raise a minimum of $2,300 for the 60 mile event which will be held in Philadelphia October 15th - 17th.
The net proceeds from the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure™ are invested in breast cancer research and community programs.
Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. In 1982, that promise became Susan G. Komen for the Cure and launched the global breast cancer movement.
Komen for the Cure is the world's largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures. Thanks to events like the Komen Race for the Cure®and the Komen 3-Day for the Cure, the organization has invested more than $1.5 billion to fulfill its promise, becoming the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world.
Special thanks to Karen Geller for her help with this program.

9:00 am - 1:00 pm
Lower Welcome Center Parking Lot
Join park staff, partners, and your neighbors in the 17th annual National Public Lands Day event-a day set aside each year to educate and engage the public in caring for their beloved public lands. Event hours are 9 am-1 pm. Participants can lend a hand on a wide variety of projects, visit the Environmental Expo, and enjoy special programs and activities.
NPLD is the nation's largest hands-on volunteer effort to improve and enhance the public lands Americans enjoy. Please join fellow Rotarians and support this worthy cause at Valley Forge National Park.
A special thank you to Grover Emrich for his continued support of this project.

King of Prussia Rotary Receives Literacy Award
Past District Governor Al Marland presented Karen Geller and Dave Rebmann the District 7450 Literacy Award for our club's outstanding service in this area.
Al Marland, spoke to the King of Prussia Rotary Club about five 2009/2010 key service areas outlined by Rotary International President John Kenny. One of these areas is Literacy. District Governor Marland stated; “Almost 800 million people world-wide are unable to read or write, having a lack of skills that makes them especially vulnerable to hunger, disease and extreme poverty. In an average community in the Philadelphia Region, 20% of adults have difficulty reading.”
In light of District Governor Marland’s enthusiastic speech our club chose ten literacy projects both home and abroad.
Our kick-off was a Rotary gathering to preview the Saturday Evening Post Museum on November 13th. Rotarians and their spouses enjoyed a film about the life of Norman Rockwell, visited exhibits from the era and studied the covers of the Saturday Evening Post through the ages, which highlighted literacy, history and events throughout the years. Rotary is grateful to Rotary Member Robert Hart and the King of Prussia Mall for sponsoring this event.
On November 16, 2009, Librarians, Kay Haskell and Beth Uckele addressed the club, clarifying and defining the term “Literacy” and sharing stunning statistics about the number of children who are unable to read in the United States. They updated our members about the efforts in our community to teach Literacy. There was much meaningful dialogue amongst club members and our speakers regarding Literacy and our students.
Following this meeting the club purchased $2007 in books about character and heroes in order to improve literacy for the Upper Merion Area Middle School students (grades 5 – 8). On January 19th, President Dave Rebmann visited Upper Merion Area Middle School for the dedication of the books and to hear Librarian Kay Haskell do a book talk for students about the books donated. Students then chose the book they wished to check out. The middle school is truly grateful for this meaningful donation and for the partnership shared with Rotary.
On an international level our club approved $1200 to be dedicated to the Polytechinical University for the education of a young lady, Martha Nyrenda, from Malawi. This will enable her to complete her last year of college. If she did not complete this year she would be destined to farming a small plot of dry land and a life of poverty. Upon completion of her last year of the University she will be able to go back to her village to help educate her people.
In April UMGA-TV produced a documentary starring our club member David Oscar who shared about the history of Rotary; our club’s many service initiatives and a report about our Literacy projects.
The club sponsored a group of students on a field trip to the Saturday Evening Post Museum Exhibition on February 26th. These students have been researching literacy throughout this school year and the field trip was their culminating activity.
Our club presented a Vocational Service Role Model Award to Ms. Barbara Giuffreda who is the sponsor of the Octagon Club. They awarded Dr. Karen Geller the Carl A. Beck Vocational Excellence Award for her “Outstanding Service to the Rotary Club of King of Prussia.”
On May 18 club members participated in a career day for the middle school students exemplifying Rotary’s Four-Way Test.
Our 10th and concluding project was the awarding of 2 scholarships to 2 graduating seniors to assist with college expenses.
In summary, the King of Prussia Rotary Club furthered Literacy through ten service projects this year. While working toward these ten goals we are proud to have enriched our middle school partnership between Rotary members and the Upper Merion Area Middle School and the people of Malawi.
On April 23 Rotarians met at Upper Merion Area Middle School with 2 National Site Visitors from the Character Education Partnership. They shared our Literacy Projects, discussed our partnership with the school and character values shared between Rotary and students in the school. The site visitors were impressed with our in-depth partnership. Upper Merion Area Middle School was awarded the 2010 National School of Character!
Special thanks to Karen Geller for her hard work in these projects
Township Manager Ron Wagenmann
Updates King of Prussia Rotary

Township Manager Ron Wagenmann Updates King of Prussia Rotary Club on Programs and Projects in Upper Merion Township.
Development Projects now under construction or planned for the near future; the new Business Improvement District program to enhance the attractiveness of the township; and, Transportation Improvement Projects to improve traffic movements in and through the area were described by Upper Merion Township Manager, Ronald G. Wagenmann at a recent King of Prussia Rotary Club luncheon meeting held at Michael’s Deli. (8-16-10)
Rotary Club president Bob Hart, the General Manager of the King of Prussia all, introduced Mr. Wagenmann and thanked him for providing his annual “State of the Township” presentation to the membership.
“This is the lunch meeting that our members look forward to every year so we can learn about all the things that are going on in the Township,” said Rotary Club president Bob Hart.
“We thank Ron for his service to the Township and his willingness to take time out of his busy schedule to provide this presentation,” Hart said.
Mr. Wagenmann listed all the construction projects that are underway in Upper Merion Township. The highlights include a Wegmans super market (to open October 2011) on the former Valley Forge golf course. Capitol Grill will open this year on Mall Boulevard and Babies R’ Us – Toys R’ Us that will open on the site of the former Toys R’ Us. A new hotel and stand alone restaurant are planned on the site of the former Penske car dealership.
The Business Improvement District (BID) program has the support of most of the businesses in the Township. Those businesses that are in the district will pay an assessment that will be used to upgrade the landscaping, signage and other physical features. The program will also fund the effort to promote the BID as a good business location that has a business friendly environment.
Transportation improvement projects are always welcome in Upper Merion and Mr. Wagenmann described how the Township invests in projects so that they are ready to go when transportation funding becomes available. “The Township purchased the land and paid for all the environmental studies for the new westbound exit and entrance to the Schuylkill Expressway at Henderson Road,” said Mr. Wagenmann. “This allows it to become one of Montgomery County’s first ‘shovel ready’ projects to be funded by the federal government under the American Recovery Program,” he added. The Route 422 river crossings and improvements to the Route 23 interchange were also discussed.
